FORAS invited to speak at Madrid conference

FORAS, the supporters’ trust that owns and runs Cork City FC, has been invited to speak about the importance of fan involvement in football at a conference in Madrid, Spain next weekend.

The invite was extended as part of the European Commission-funded ‘Improving Football Governance’ project that the Trust has been leading in Ireland since 2010.

FORAS hosted a similar conference in Cork last November and will now assist its Spanish counterparts in advocating for greater supporter involvement in football across Europe.

Project manager and FORAS board member Niamh O’Mahony said:

“I am delighted to be able to attend the FASFE event in Madrid later this month. Ireland, like the rest of our European partners in this project, has many different issues which supporters can help to try and improve and resolve.

“Our conference in Ireland last November was a really positive weekend that was beneficial to everyone who attended and has given us a real sense of purpose for the future. The role of supporters in football has never been more important across Europe and I am looking forward to hearing a lot more about what is happening in Spain.”

The Irish project’s working group, assisted by supporters-run clubs, trusts and groups across the League of Ireland, is currently piecing together a handbook that aims to assist Irish football supporters at every level of the game.

The toolkit will detail issues such as setting up a trust in Ireland, the importance of proper governance and procedures and how being involved with its local community can be extremely beneficial to any sporting organisations.
